Pročitajte vise u članku The Economista.

Strike in strong defence of Spanish public education system

"The Plataforma Estatal por la Escuela Pública", an alliance of organisations aiming for the protection of the public education system in Spain, has called for a strike at the public universities on 24 March 2015. Among the demonstrating people who will follow this call and lay down their work, are also the members of ETUCE's Spanish affiliates, F.E.CC.OO and FETE/UGT. With their protest action they want to send out a strong signal of discontent. Critics complained above all that no public debate had taken place but that the reforms were approved by the government and by means of three royal decrees. According to the unions, these reforms will have a serious impact on the Spanish university system which will suffer from particularly bad effects on the funding and on the employment situation at universities. However, negative outcomes could also include the further overreaching of the private universities and watered-down education quality through changed regulations for teaching certifications. Corporatisation ‘threatens academic freedom’– AAUP

Higher education’s “romance with entrepreneurialism” puts the hallowed principle of academic freedom at risk at universities around the world, general counsel for the American Association of University Professors, or AAUP, told comparative education researchers on Wednesday. And while there's plenty of blame to go around for that, she said, faculty members themselves share some of it.  Be it through the seductive allure of corporate funding or the risk of complacency as a byproduct of tenure, the ways in which some faculty members have "failed to resist the corporatisation of the university (is) what I worry about most", Risa Lieberwitz, a law and labour professor at Cornell University, told attendees of the Comparative and International Education Society, or CIES, at their annual conference in Washington.  Lieberwitz acknowledged that economic realities can get in the way of ideal goals. “We are doing our work for the public interest... (but) capitalism is a system that does not allow for us to really explore the public interest,” she said. “So we’re constantly struggling to try to promote a democratic vision within an undemocratic structure.” Read the whole article here.

New 'readymade' U-multirank on international orientation of higher education

A new ‘readymade’ ranking comparing internationalisation performance was released this month in U-Multirank. The formula of the ‘readymade rankings’ has been introduced for users’ convenience by providing a ‘finished’ rating operated by the U-Multirank Team without requiring the user to manually select indicators to define which university performs best. For the time being, three other readymade rankings have been produced: two for higher education institutions as a whole (Research & Research Linkages and on Economic Involvement), and one for a specific academic field (Business Studies programmes). Only 27 universities out of the 237 achieve top scores on all four indicators. They are located in 12 different countries: France tops the list with 6 institutions followed by Austria (4), in third position Belgium and the Netherlands (3), then we have Switzerland, Sweden and Ireland (2), and finally Denmark, Hungary, Norway, Slovenia and the UK (1). Only 11 of these institutions feature in the top 200 of the 2014 Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. Although the top-notch institutions are a very diverse group, there are two types of institutions - the French Grandes Écoles and the specialised technological/science/agricultural universities – that are clearly over-represented in this ranking focused on internationalisation.  Read the whole article here.
